Sometimes the right tip can extend the life of an unsupported printer. I tried the printer troubleshooter, with no result.
I forget the message, but basically it said it couldn't solve the problem. I don't think I want to try the British Telcom site because that sounds too general for this problem, but thanks for the suggestion. And HP is out of line not offering older drivers if this printer actually came with them for older OS.
If you have the install CD, look on it and see if it says for Win Vista or 7 or whatever. Because when you go to their site, they can detect your OS and not offer drivers for older Windows versions. They tell you Windows has them and through Windows Update. However, If you unplug it, uninstall it, restart PC, re install it and this problem occurs, then this is how to get it install in the Windows compatibility the software and drivers were written for. This is what compatibility mode is for and has been for since the first versions of windows OS's.
I have got Windows Operating Systems are backward compatible for almost all software and devices all the way back to XP.
And so is every other OS for previous OS's. If they didn't, they would have been out of business years ago as people would have to buy new PC's every time they wanted to upgrade to a newer operating system, because the OEM's are not spending millions to develop software and drivers for newer OS versions. They are old news to them and moved forward to the current models and technology and they made their money already on them.
That's the unpredictable part of "not supported. Then, one update comes along that changes the code just enough so that the old driver doesn't work well or at all. If HP isn't updating the driver to keep up with the changes to Windows, suddenly you're out of luck.
It's always been this way, actually. Every time a new version of Windows came out there was all kinds of hardware that no longer worked. The difference between then and now is that in the old days many years would go by between new versions of Windows, and now there's a new version twice a year.
If you want to know why hardware manufacturers stop supporting a product that has been around for so long, just follow the money trail. It costs money to keep on updating drivers, and when a given model stops selling it's not bringing in money to cover the costs of support.
